| Google for Education is launching its AI Educator Series Badge-a-thon, and university educators should pay attention, even though the initiative focuses on K–12. On Saturday, September 19, Google Learning & Education will offer a full day of short, 30-minute learning sessions designed to help educators develop practical AI skills and earn ISTE-aligned Google AI Educator Series badges. Why should this matter to us at the university? – Most of us already work within the Google ecosystem. Search, Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, YouTube, Google Scholar, Gemini and other Google services form part of our everyday academic and personal work. – More importantly, many of our future students are growing up and learning within the same ecosystem. Today’s high-school students are already using Google tools and increasingly Gemini and other AI-supported educational services. What Google introduces in K–12 education today may shape the expectations, digital habits and AI competencies of the students entering our classrooms tomorrow. – This creates an important connection between school and university education. Universities cannot design AI literacy, teaching and assessment as if students encounter AI for the first time after admission. We need to understand what they have already learned, which tools they know, how they use AI and which competencies schools increasingly expect them to develop.
